Somewhere along the way I've realised if you want to comfort a person all you need to do is lie to them. Tell them that reality isn't what they think it is. Tell them things are better than they seem. Tell them that it is the world that is wrong, not them. Not a single shed of sympathy or empathy is required, anyone can do it.
