At first sight the problem seems to boil down to this: morals are for avoiding an unfair distribution of pleasure and pain. This means that some individuals must get less pleasure and more pain. As a rule, these individuals will only submit to the sacrifice under the threat of still more pain if they do not cooperate. This is based on the assumption that every man is for himself, and observes the interests of the community only to the extent that these are obviously his own interests.
