A Vanished World - Chris Lowney
The German ambassador John of Gorze was dazzled even before entering the hall of the caliphs. His biographer depicts John padding through the court's outer precincts, which were "carpeted with most costly rugs and coverings." The caliph's soldiers lined both sides of the road, "with spears held erect, beside them others brandishing javelin and staging demonstrations of aiming them at each other."
