Text: Judaism is not a static ideal to be maintained by erecting walls that would prevent any meaningful interaction with the general cultural environment. There is a perennial need of interpretation and adaptation of the eternal values of Israel in order to meet the specific conditions of every historical situation... It is the task of the Jewish sage, in particular, to interpret the key cultural symbols of his own times in light of this mental language, on the one hand, and the constitutive values.
