To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don't grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown. Instead you relax, and float.

...Except that faith implies trusting without evidence. Any person who doesn't know how to swim instinctively tries to find purchase with hands and feet on the infirm water surface... Only through an empirical understanding of how your body interacts with the water and the guidance of someone who knows how to swim do you learn to move your body in a different way to use the water's reduced resistance to your own advantage. A person's trust in the water can be better described as confidence in his experience of water and trust in his own ability to move within it.
