Richard Chisholm, Garth Nettheim - Understanding law (8th edition)
Law, like happiness, poverty and good music, is different things to different people. Politicians may see it as the expression of current government policy, accommodating the recurrent tensions between such groups as employees and employers, conservationists and developers, and so on. Poor people may see it as hostile and inaccessible. Rich people may see it as something they employ their tax adviser to outwit, or which protects them from the forces of violence and disorder.

Reinhard Heinke - Success with Fuchsias
Names like "ballerina flower" or "bell flower" have often been used to describe the appearance of the enchanting fuchsia flower. Fuchsia flowerheads conjure up images of graceful dancers in delicate petal skirts, or rippling wind chimes, ringing gently at the slightest stirring of a breeze. Since their discovery nearly 300 years ago, fuchsias have charmed many a gardener and plant lover with their incomparable beauty.

Beginner's handbook MOJANG - Minecraft
You can play alone in single player, or ask a friend to show you what to do in multiplayer. For the purposes of this book we have assumed you'll be starting out on your own in single player. In Creative mode, no monsters will attack you, you'll be able to fly around and you'll have a full inventory of items. This is great if you want unlimited resources to build amazing creations and buildings, without having them blown up by creepers every night.

W. Somerset Maugham - "The painted veil"
I wonder. I wonder if it matters that what they have aimed at is illusion. Their lives are in themselves beautiful. I have an idea that the only thing which makes it possible to regard this world we live in without disgust is the beauty which now and then men create out of the chaos. The pictures they paint, the music they compose, the books they write, and the lives they lead. Of all these the richest in beauty is the beautiful life. That is the perfect work of art.

Bill Bryson - preface to Bill Bryson's dictionary for writers & editors
It is a personal collection, built up over thirty years as a writer and editor in two countries, and so inevitably - inescapably - it reflects my own interests, experiences, and blind spots. You may not need, as I do, to be reminded that it is Anjelica Huston but Whitney Houston, or have occasion at any point in your life to write the name of the district of Sydney known gloriously and unimprovably as Woolloomooloo.

W. Somerset Maugham - Preface to "The Painted Veil"
I think this is the only novel I have written in which I started from a story rather than from a character. It is difficult to explain the relation between character and plot. You cannot very well think of a character in the void; the moment you think of him, you think of him in some situation, doing something; so that the character and at least his principal action seem to be the result of a simultaneous act of the imagination.
