What really helped me improve my typing speed is that I kept practicing. It's really not so bad once you get familiar with the keys. The hard part is typing fast.

When my fingers hurt after too much time on the keyboard, I just get up, pour a bowl of warm/hot water, and soak my fingers in it for around 5/10 minutes. Really soothing, you should try it.
