Books are gateways to adventures. For instance, you open up a book about a talking cat that needs to save his friend. If the writing is good enough you should imagine yourself as you travel with the cat, experiencing his pain when he gets hurt, the joy he expresses as he rescues his friend, and his relief when he finds that his friend is okay.
